History

The first collection containing also animal taxa (mainly butterflies, snails and cockles) was purchased from Anna Jordán of Nagyszombat, according to the surviving inventory books. This was in 1811, not long after the foundation of the Hungarian National Museum. Not much is known about the other early acquisitions, due to the 1838 flood of Budapest, in which most of them was destroyed.

Research field

The department is characteristically a museum collection, so as a consequence and also traditionally the Department of Zoology conducts faunistical and taxonimical research. The fact, however, that in Hungary there is no institute for Zoology or Animal Ecology, significantly adds to its research tasks.
